Dear Mochi,
One year today, buddy. Your leash still hangs by the door. None of us can bring ourselves to move it.

Mochi came home in the spring of 2011, a small red fox of a puppy who fell asleep in the car with one ear inside out. He loved sunny windowsills, stolen socks and the first snow of every year. Every morning he waited by the door with his leash in his mouth, and every afternoon he walked the same loop to the corner bakery, where Mrs. Park kept a biscuit for him. He was stubborn the way Shibas are, and gentle in a way that surprised people. When anyone in the house was sad, he would lie down against their feet and stay there until they felt better. He was fourteen when he left us, on a quiet afternoon in March. The house is too tidy now. We miss the socks.

Dear Mochi,
Our first Christmas without you. It snowed this morning, your favorite. I went out early and walked your loop, and I swear I could hear your tags jingling.

Dear Mochi,
You were the only one allowed on my good sofa. I hope there are windowsills full of sun where you are.
Grandma
Dear Mochi,
I still set a biscuit aside at four o'clock. Old habits. The corner is very quiet without you, Mochi.
Mrs. Park, from the bakery
Dear Mochi,
You were the best nap partner. Run free, buddy. We'll see you at the bridge.
